Heart rate

Continuous wrist-based heart rate on BP Doctor smartwatches—how optical PPG works and what it helps you understand.

Heart rate tracking for everyday use

BP Doctor uses automatic, continuous wrist heart rate so you can see resting trends, workout zones, and recovery without wearing a chest strap for daily wellness.

How photoplethysmography (PPG) works

A light sensor shines into the skin while photodiodes measure how much light is absorbed. Blood volume rises and falls with each beat, producing a pulse waveform used to estimate beats per minute.

The green LED you may notice during monitoring is part of this optical process—not harmful infrared or UV exposure at normal brightness levels.

What you can learn

  • Use heart rate zones to keep training intensity appropriate.
  • Review sleep stages with overnight pulse patterns.
  • Estimate calories burned with activity plus heart rate context.
  • Try guided breathing sessions paced to your live heart rate where supported.

Research and patents

BP Doctor heart rate technology has been evaluated in external studies and is backed by numerous patents related to wrist-based cardiovascular sensing. Results still depend on fit, motion, and skin perfusion.
